6 Easy Steps to a Climate Friendly Camping Trip

Camping season is upon us – but how can you keep your outdoor experience green?

The weather is getting warmer and you want to get back to nature with a weekend in the woods but you want to make sure your camping trip is as climate friendly as possible.

We’ve rounded up some top tips on how to enjoy the great outdoors without doing any damage.

1. Equipment

Unless you’re a regular camper, there’s really no need to spend loads of money investing in new camping gear.

Instead, have a look in second-hand stores or try online. There’s even websites like freecycle or local sell or swap facebook pages you could try and hunt down some used camping gear.

2. Cooking

For the more avid campers – or just BBQ enthusiasts: you could invest in a solar powered grill.

Sol Source, a solar-powered grill from Norwegian start-up One Earth Designs, requires no fuel, heats up quickly, is easy to clean and produces no emissions whatsoever!

3. Gadgets

Do your best to avoid bringing unnecessary gadgets that will require batteries or using your car to charge up. Leave your laptop at home and enjoy the scenery!

4. Travel

When picking out your camping site see if you can look a bit closer to home. Find a more local site rather than travelling further afield – you’ll save time and carbon!

5. Fires

If you’re planning a campfire make sure to keep it small, contained and away from flammables. It’s also important to make sure you put it out at least half an hour before you go to bed incase it reignites.

Wildfires can be catastrophic, just check out the recent fires in Fort McMurray in Canada!

6. Leaving

When your trip is over make sure you clear up after yourself. There’s nothing worse than leaving a camp site covered in rubbish – whether it’s biodegradable or not!

You can follow these seven ‘Leave No Trace’ principles.
