Patricia Espinosa’s First Week as UN Climate Chief… on Twitter
While the world is getting ready for the next global climate summit, Patricia Espinosa takes over as the UN’s next climate chief.
Christiana Figueres’ – who’s now running for UN Secretary General – successor has had a busy first week at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
We’ve put together an overview of Espinosa’s first days, as seen on Twitter: from saying goodbye, to her first public appearance as Executive Secretary and a video call with the pilot of the world’s first transatlantic electric airplane.
Farewells
Before heading off to Bonn to start her new job at the UNFCCC secretariat, Espinosa said goodbye to her colleagues in Berlin where she worked as the Mexican Ambassador.

First Day
The official COP22 Twitter account wished Espinosa good luck on her first day. The 2016 climate change conference in Marrakesh will be one of Espinosa’s biggest projects this year, so she’ll be working closely with the COP22 team in Morocco.

Signing the Guestbook
She met with the mayor of Bonn, West Germany’s former capital. Today, the city hosts the UNFCCC and a range of other UN institutions.

Speaking with Solar Impulse
Probably the highlight of her first week on the job was a live chat with Bertrand Piccard, the pilot of Solar Impulse – the first solar powered plane to fly around the world.
Piccard was passing over Saudi Arabia at the time of the call as they discussed the importance of innovation and collaboration.
"You are showing what #solarenergy can do" – @PEspinosaC to @bertrandpiccard https://t.co/jD7i7eJXug @solarimpulsehttps://t.co/eLgRA1PCJt
