Smart Energy Hack
- Date: 29 September, 08.00 – 18:30
- Venue: DTU Skylab | Diplomvej, Building 373A, 2800 Kongens Lyngby
Students, young professionals and entrepreneurs who are passionate about solving critical issues and creating large-scale, positive climate impact are invited to the Smart Energy Hack organized by EIT Climate-KIC in collaboration with DTU Skylab, MI Smart Grids and EUDP.
The Smart Energy Hack is an international case competition within the field of cleantech, green tech, innovation and entrepreneurship. Participants will get the opportunity to combine real life energy-related challenges from Danish and global cities.
Students and startups often have fresh perspectives on these subjects and although it requires further steps to develop the concepts, a starting point will be bringing the findings of the project into play through the use of a smart energy hack.
The ambition is that the presented ideas can develop into tangible and scalable smart grid solutions to be implemented by municipalities in addressing current issues. This hackathon is a fantastic opportunity for everyone who wants to contribute to mitigate climate change and create a healthier, cleaner and more sustainable world.
EIT Climate-KIC will work with students from Danish universities on solving challenges from Nairobi, Kenya and Durban, South Africa. The three winning teams from the Smart Energy Hack will pitch their solutions to the expert panel at the Next Generation City Action event on the 8 October.

City Industry Dialogue for Clean & Healthy Construction
- Date: 9 October, Master Class 9.00 – 11.40 | Market dialogue 12.00 – 17.00
- Venue for the two connected events:
- Master Class: BLOX | Bryghusgade, 1473 Copenhagen
- Market Dialogue: Islands Brygge Kulturhus | Islands Brygge18, 2300 Copenhagen
The expected growth of urban population will drastically exacerbate the need for buildings and infrastructure that already contribute close to 40% of global emissions. The built environment value chain has a vital role to play in responding to the climate urgency we are facing. We need to learn new ways of working and apply a variety of methods and innovation – and we need to do it together, at the right pace and scale.
This event is targeted at stakeholders in the value chain involved in the delivery of clean construction, who we invite to discuss how we can work together by leveraging on green public procurement and innovation to achieve low to zero emissions materials and machinery.
The event is co-organised by EIT Climate-KIC, The Municipality of Copenhagen, C40, Gate21, ICLEI and Innovation Norway with support from the European Commission, Bellona, Innovative Procurements, EUROCITIES and CNCA.
Master Class | 9 October 9.00 – 11.40 | Arena, BLOX
The master class will focus on lessons learnt and return of experience from initiatives and projects on zero emission materials and machinery, framed in a whole-life approach to buildings. Interactive panels and presentations will share the opportunities and challenges of joint tenders and discuss pathways for change and alternatives to cut construction emissions and air pollution.
Programme:

The youth will develop realisable and concrete concept suggestions for cities globally, with the best concepts presented to C40 City delegates at the main event. Systemic change in our food system - Data as change driver in public procurement of food
- Date: 10 October, 13.00 – 17.00
- Venue: Copenhagen House of Food | Ingerslevsgade 44, 1705 Copenhagen V
The changing climate and demographics of our planet bring to life the need for a rapid shift in diets and agricultural practices. To reach the targets of the 2015 Paris Agreement and the climate change objectives for 2030, habits, production systems, metrics and governance will have to change drastically.
Alongside the private foodservice market, public sector institutions – hospitals, care homes, schools, universities and canteens in government buildings – represent a significant part of the procurement of any national food economy. Green public procurement of food provides the opportunity to drive local and regional food economies towards more sustainable paths.
The conversion to organic production has been relatively easy in terms of measurement and baselining but measuring CO2 and other emissions is complicated in terms of data availability. We need methodological consensus in order to educate procurement officers, kitchens and consumers to make informed choices necessary to transform the food system at the scale that is needed – and we need LCAs on more product groups encompassing sustainable production methods.
The event Systemic change in our food system is hosted by EIT Climate-KIC and Copenhagen House of Food with the aim to gather stakeholders involved in the food value chain around public meals. We want to facilitate the development and shift towards sustainable food systems with public procurement in the forefront. The event is designed to help us answer the burning questions around reliable validation and verification of the actual sustainability of our food choices.
Programme:
13.00 Introduction by EIT Climate-KIC and Copenhagen House of Food
13.20 Three inspirational talks on data, validation and verification (8-10 minutes each including Q&A)
14.00 Facilitated workshop with the aim to provide insights to the above challenges
16.00 Harvesting knowledge with feedback from workshop participants
16.30 Collecting viewpoints and pointing out next steps
17.00 Refreshments and snacks
Launch of CBCA Playbook - Accelerating Climate Action Through City Business Collaboration
- Date: 11 October, 12.30 – 13.00
- Venue: Tivoli Conference Centre
We are pleased to announce that EIT Climate-KIC’s Chief Executive Officer, Kirsten Dunlop, will speak about the importance of finding new ways of cities and business working together to drive the systemic change needed to address the climate emergency at the launch event of the CBCA Playbook.
The CBCA playbook is a comprehensive ‘how to’ guide for cities to develop a City Business Climate Alliance. The latest science has shown that we must act urgently to limit global warming to a 1.5 degree pathway. In response, cities are stepping up; declaring climate emergencies and developing and implementing ambitious climate action plans. Business are also advancing on their climate agenda – over 600 businesses have committed to science based targets. For the first time in history, targets set by mayors across the globe align to commitments made by CEOs.
But to deliver change at the speed we need to secure the prosperous and climate safe future we all want, city governments and businesses need to work together in strategic and long-term partnerships to drive down emissions. Designed to be a blueprint for city officials, the City Business Climate Alliances guide provides the concrete steps needed to form a successful partnership; the core principles behind such a partnership, and how partnerships between cities and the private sector can help address cities’ mitigation, adaptation and resiliency challenges.
