About Land Use
Increasing rural depopulation in Europe and economic activities that mine soils and landscapes are causing land to become sources of emissions, rather than sinks.
A lack of land management is also raising the risk of wildfires that can create spikes of emissions, while opportunities for carbon sequestration are missed. Land use is looking at turning landscapes from carbon sources to sinks tackling a lack of investment, forging new social contracts with soil and forests, and lining-up value-chain incentives.
The Deep Demonstration has built up a portfolio of land use projects with the Government of Scotland, Ireland, the Climate Smart Forest Economy programme and a LULUCF programme with the European environment agency.
