3 UK Climate-KIC start-ups shortlisted for New Energy & Cleantech Awards 2015
Three UK Climate-KIC start-ups have been shortlisted for the New Energy & Cleantech Awards 2015.
The competition culminates in a ceremony in London tonight (29 April) and recognises “those who play a pivotal role in the shaping of the future green energy and cleantech industries.” The shortlisted Climate-KIC start-ups are Open Utility, Desolenator and Upside.
Deal of the Year
Climate-KIC start-up Open Utility has been nominated for Deal of the Year for attracting £500,000 worth of funding from the UK’s Department of Energy & Climate Change Nominet Trust for their Piclo project.
Open Utility
Piclo is a peer-to-peer marketplace enabling customers to buy and sell renewable energy, bypassing energy companies who act in their own best interest and allowing consumers to buy their energy directly from independent renewable generators.

Innovator of the Year
In the Innovator of the Year category, two rising stars in Climate-KIC’s UK Accelerator compete to take the crown.
Desolenator
Desolenator has had very successful year, after becoming a runner-up in ClimateLaunchpad, they raised over €150,000 via a crowdfunding campaign and were featured as Guardian’s Start-Up of the Year for their solar desalination technology.
Upside, with their cloud-based energy storage solution, have also gone from strength to strength after winning the Climate Market Accelerator Dynamic Demand challenge last year.
Upside
The start-up has secured funding for an Innovate UK partner project and has already won a multitude of awards in IT and Cleantech innovation.
