Kraków Climathon: Empowering citizens’ activities

The Climate-KIC Climathon is a global 24-hour climate change event which will take place simultaneously in major cities around the world on 28 October 2016. 

In Kraków, the Climate-KIC Climathon will begin on the afternoon of the 28 October CEST and finish on the following day. It is organised by Fundacja Aeris Futuro to open up communication channels in the city to increase awareness of climate change in the area.

The Challenge

Kraków needs to strengthen cooperation for climate actions at local level between citizens, NGOs, institutions, business and local government. The city needs to scale-up mitigation and adaptation actions taken by individuals and organizations, therefore there is a need to develop new cooperation and communication channels, strengthen citizens and NGOs in institutional way and increase overall awareness of climate change within citizens.

The challenge focuses on:
1) development of new, and improvement of existing, cooperation channels between citizens, NGOs, organisations and the Local Government (Urząd Miasta Krakowa);
2) possibilities of strengthening and scaling-up local climate action taken by individuals as well as organizations (in cooperation with Local Government);
3) increasing overall awareness of climate change issues in Kraków and citizens engagement (in the context of mitigation and adaptation actions).

We focus on small scale actions to be taken by groups of individuals or organizations, covering wide range of climate change mitigation and adaptation actions (green infrastructure, water management, transport, energy efficiency, spatial management etc.).
