Trondheim Climathon: Zero Emission Knowledge Axis

The Climate-KIC Climathon is a global climate change event which will take place simultaneously in major cities around the world on 28 October 2016.
In Trondheim, the Climate-KIC Climathon will begin on the morning of the 28 October CEST and finish the following day. It is organised by Trondheim Municipality and NTNU and looks to reduce the CO2 emissions from the public transport sector.

The Challenge
CO2-emissions from the transport sector account for approximately 50 % of the total CO2-emissions in Trondheim. Recent statistics show that the number of travels by cars has increased by 2.6 % from 2014 to 2015. The city needs measurable, integrated and engaging solutions to reduce the CO2-emissions from the transport sector in the Knowledge Axis and the City of Trondheim!
The Knowledge Axis (Kunnskapsaksen) is the area stretching from Sluppen in the south to the waterfront Brattøra/Nyhavna in the north. The area is called the “Knowledge Axis” as it is concentrated with many of the most prominent knowledge actors from research, education, industry and public sector in Trondheim. This knowledge-intensive area will be the playground of Trondheim’s future growth. Exciting processes are happening already, including the campus relocation of Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), super buses along the artery of public transportation and Elgeseter street living lab, just to name a few.
We need a holistic approach to cover the everyday need of different citizen groups. How do we join the existing projects together? Which technologies and methodologies are up-and-coming and can be adopted? How can smart technology help us? Could driver-less vehicles be part of the solution, for example?
Through the Climathon movement, we’d like to engage students, scientists, entrepreneurs and citizens from different backgrounds to co-design innovative and future-oriented solutions and business cases for “Zero Emission Knowledge Axis” and the city beyond.
