The Challenge
Context
Thanks to a new economic model of production and consumption, the circular economy, it is possible to generate economic value (ie employment and income) through sustainable business models (in the environment as well as social sphere). These, among other things,:
• Increase the product life cycle
• Create value in used goods, avoiding they become a waste
• Favor the recycling and reuse of raw materials and retail products
• Increase the awareness of citizens with regard to consumer awareness
Turin Challenge
Conceived as a “policy hackaton”, Turin Climathon will be an opportunity to develop and produce integrated solutions regarding the theme of recycling and reuse in a double perspective:
a) Identify policy tools and regulations which would facilitate the construction of a strategy towards the “zero waste” and raise awareness of citizens with regard to consumption patterns (redesign policy)
b) Develop new product models and business plans that can foster the transition towards a circular economy and sustainable development (product redesign).
The solutions will include innovative solutions of technological or social nature, and or business models.
The two challenges are addressing to two specific areas of reflection and design, and will both aim to offer innovative and feasible solutions, also through follow-up activities as a reward for the winners of the challenge.
Pitching to expert judges
The participants, divided into work teams, will have the task of identifying policy solutions (recommendations for politicians/administrators) or business ideas (innovative as a model, for the use of technology and for the social content) or hybrid ones. Then the selected ideas will be evaluated by a jury that will award the most complying to the objectives of the challenge.
Different kind of experts will support the teams: circular economy, waste management, recycling and reuse experts, and local administrators already working in the field will provide the cognitive elements (data, technical information and best practices) needed to produce coherent and feasible ideas. One or more experts in hackathon events will ensure both methodological and organizational support.
Partners
The challenge of Turin is built through a process involving partners and stakeholders and namely: City of Turin (coordinator); Environment Park(delivery partner); Istituto Superiore Mario Boella; Open INCET; Politecnico di Torino; Triciclo SCS; Università degli Studi di Torino; Intesa Sanpaolo; Torino Wireless Foundation.
