Updated Investor Marketplace aims to scale green funding with networks effects
Before the recent launch of Climate KIC’s new Investor Marketplace – an innovative platform planning to leverage ‘network effects’ to encourage cleantech startup co-funding and scale green finance – a matchingmaking event was held in London, offering a glimpse of how the platform could transform investor-startup relations.
On 23 August, ten investors met ten sustainable startups during 10 x 10, a matchmaking event hosted at Imperial College London. The event was structured as six 20-minute meetings, with 30 minutes of networking afterwards, for a total run time of two and a half hours. Climate KIC plans to host such an event in different European cities once or twice a year, as an in-person version of the Investor Marketplace platform.
By joining the platform, investors can gain transparent visibility into the world’s largest cleantech startup pipeline, search more widely across Europe at high speed, flag and manage their preferred investment opportunities, and network with like-minded investors and potentially find co-investors.
“Investor Marketplace is unique in that it helps investors like us find qualified deals on specific sectors,” said Akriti Dokania, Investment Associate, Octopus Ventures. “The speed dating event was one example which helped bring few early stage companies to our notice.”
Startups also enjoy many benefits by registering to the Investor Marketplace: They can be a visible part of the largest cleantech platform of its type, attract investors from across Europe and the rest of the world, start dialogues in an efficient way, and accelerate the time until investment.
The newly-released iteration on the Investor Marketplace boasts several key improvements and additions for investors:
- Contact the startups directly
- Save your search criteria
- Save your favourite startups
- Learn more about the investment opportunity
- Connect with other potential co-investors
Importantly, the latter encourages a ‘network effect’ – an effect whereby the value of a product or service increases according to the number of others using it.
The Investor Marketplace builds on the momentum of the Climate KIC Accelerator programme by connecting participating startups with investors so that, together, they may work towards accelerating the transition to a profitable sustainable economy. The platform hosts approximately 100 startups from a variety of sectors so far, and aims to scale to 200 after six months.
