Venice Climathon: Cultural heritage in a changing climate

22 Aug 2016
The Climate-KIC Climathon is a global 24-hour climate change event which will take place simultaneously in major cities around the world on 28 October 2016.
In Venice the Climate-KIC Climathon will begin on the morning of the 28 October CET and finish on the following day. It is organised by the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM), and International Center for Climate Governance (ICCG) to create new solutions which are able to combine both mitigation (e.g. energy efficiency in the built environment) and adaptation objectives (resilience to floods and extreme temperatures).

The Challenge
Venice is one of the World Heritage sites most at threat from the impacts of current and expected climate change. Rising sea level, exacerbated by local subsidence, and extreme temperatures are among the main hazards to be faced by the city and its inhabitants.
Venice is unique both in terms of the immense cultural patrimony it holds and the peculiar way of living of its residents. This calls for tailor made solutions for enhancing its coping and adaptive capacity. With this in mind, the Venice Climathon will address the following question:
‘What kind of low carbon solutions can be imagined to increase Venice resilience towards the current and expected impacts of climate change?’
The focus will be on the built environment of the Venice city centre, i.e. buildings (historical heritage) and public spaces (squares, streets). Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM), and International Center for Climate Governance (ICCG)will work on solutions which are able to combine both mitigation (e.g., energy efficiency in the built environment) and adaptation objectives (resilience to floods and extreme temperatures). The approach will be highly trans-disciplinary, combining urban planning, architecture, and business perspectives, among others.
Pitching to expert judges
The Climathon event will culminate in presentation of each group’s idea in front of panel members who will provide valuable feedback. The panel is comprised of different science and business experts.
Partners
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM)
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research institution devoted to the study of sustainable development and global governance. Officially recognized by the President of the Italian Republic in 1989 and in full operation since 1990, FEEM has grown to become a leading research centre, providing timely and objective analysis on a wide range of environmental, energy and global economic issues.
FEEM’s mission is to improve through research the quality of decision-making in public and private spheres. This goal is achieved by creating an international and multidisciplinary network of researchers working on several innovative programmes, by providing and promoting training in specialized areas of research, by disseminating research results through a wide range of outreach activities, and by delivering directly to policy makers via participation in various institutional fora.
International Center for Climate Governance (ICCG)
The International Center for Climate Governance (ICCG) was founded in 2009 as a joint initiative of Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) and Fondazione Giorgio Cini. The ICCG is now an internationally renowned center whose activities focus on the design of climate policy and related governance issues.
The ICCG’s mission is to disseminate scientifically-based, socio-economic research in the fields of climate change mitigation and adaptation to policymakers, business leaders, academics and the general public. It seeks to achieve this at the local, national and international levels through interdisciplinary activities as well as through the production of climate and energy policy analyses and definitions of optimal governance models for climate change management.
